Russell Kennedy

Russell is a Senior Lecturer in Screen and Design in the School of Communication and Creative Arts in Deakin University’s Faculty of Arts and Education.

Russell’s research is in the area of cultural representation, focusing on the relationship of Indigenous visual culture to national Identity. His PhD (2015) titled, ‘Designing with Indigenous Knowledge Protocols for Respectful and Authentic Cross-cultural Representation in Communication Design Practice’ led to co authorship of the award winning Australian and International Indigenous Design Charters.

Russell is a Fellow of both the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce (RSA) and the Design Institute of Australia (DIA). He was President of the International Council of Design Ico-D (2009-2011) and a board member (2003 -2013). He was a Regional Ambassador to INDEX: ‘Design to Improve life’, the Danish Government’s International Award program (2007-2013).”

  • Co-Director: Design Mind, International Design and Innovation Platform – connecting research activities aligned with the Geelong’s UNESCO City of Design agenda.
