Joanne Watson

Jo is a Senior Lecturer in Disability and Inclusion in the School of Health and Social Development, in Deakin University’s Faculty of Health.
Jo is a Speech Pathologist and researcher with over 30 years’ experience in the disability sector as a clinician, trainer, support worker, family member and researcher. Jo has worked in Australia, China, Hong Kong and the United States within these roles.

Jo has a special interest in working with and supporting people with complex communication and support needs and their supporters, through the use of augmentative and alternative communication, assistive technology, supported decision-making. She has an interest in the application of digital technologies in her teaching and practice. Within her research, Jo works collaboratively with people with complex communication and support needs and their supporters to enhance their self-determination through supported decision making and augmentative and alternative communication techniques.
